...i just received confirmation from my kiddo cousin Jemima that “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” was being screened at Novelty! She even broke into an impromptu “SENORITA”, the number that featured quite often in the flick's TV promos...i asked her if she would like to come along...she replied in that typical “Convent-Educated Gal” accent : “Oh! You know! There are bugs in the seats!”...but deep in my mind...i knew she was one of the “Generation Y” species with a massive “ATTENTION DISTRUPTIVE SYNDROME” (in cinematic terms … the “GHAJINI EFFECT”!!!)...
...Good riddance!...in any case she would have “BUGGED” me with her demands to buy loads of stuff to eat ...before...in between...and...after...the MOVIE!!!

( Sometimes...my mind wonders...Do people come to the Cinemas to eat??? Maybe one day...i shall ask the AUDIENCE who carry OVER-LOADED TRAYs to the SEATs...their horrendous “MUNCHING” adding that X-TRA SURROUND SOUND EFFECT ...which the “EAR-FULL SOUND DESIGNERS” might not have envisaged!!! )

... Once upon a time ... in a sleepy little town called Kalimpong ...

(Statutory Warning : This "ANECDOTE" is a work of fiction based on true facts. All characters have walked this earth atleast once in their numerous lifetimes ... Resemblance to any person living or dead is not co-incidental!)


... It was around the year 1950 ... after the "Chinese" invasion of "Tibet", "Shakabpa", a prominent Tibetan historian, author, and one of the keepers of "Lhasa-the place of the Gods" ... chose "Kalimpong" as his base to initiate the "FREEDOM OF TIBET " campaign. He spent most of his "time-in-exile" writing "inspirational articles" for the "TIBET MIRROR PRESS" in Kalimpong and was a prominent member of the "Tibetan Government in Exile" ...

... But our story starts here ... Shakabpa established this little town's "First Cinema (popularly called-Picture) Hall" named "Kanchan" that opened the floodgates for many blockbuster runs. The entire town had never watched a movie in their lives! The first ever movie show in town was complimentary and about 300 people thronged to the cinema hall, obviously with gleeful abandon! The slide of "NO SMOKING in the auditorium written in English and the local language Nepali" was greeted with loud cheers and whistles. The movie began ... The first slide of "Lord Shiva's image" accompanied by "bell chimes" made many people "bow their heads" in salutation to the divine. The next scene opened with a panoramic shot of the Himalayas...you could hear a section of jolly women heaving a collective sigh -"seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" coming out of their inner souls. The next scene on the screen was of a stormy night with flashes of lightning and thunder. While every soul was glued to the screen ... all of a sudden, a villager started to run out of the auditorium ...

At the exit gate the usher asked him - "Hey! what happened?"

The villager answered - "Sir ... i had left my clothes to dry in the open this morning ... it seems its going to rain ... i'll just go ... pick them up and come back!" ...

Before the usher could react ... he ran off like a lightning flash!!! ...

... As years "rolled" by ... "Kanchan Cinema" became a great medium of entertainment in this quaint hill town. Cut to - sometime in the mid-1970s ... "Sholay - a milestone in the history of Indian Cinema" was being screened. News of the screening reached far flung villages around Kalimpong.

One of the village blokes was returning home after watching "Sholay" ...On reaching his village, he was asked by one of his friends - "Hey! How was the movie? Who are the heroes?"

The bloke said - "Wow! Too many fights! Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Gabbar Singh ... Too good! Amazing!!!"

The friend said - "Oh! Is it? I shall also go and watch it tomorrow!"

The bloke replied - "Well its no point now! After all your favourite hero Amitabh Bachchan is already dead!!!

The friend was too stunned to react! ...

... and the "STORY" continues ... till another dramatic "REAL LIFE ENCOUNTER" ...
